Hey friends welcome to my channel, my name is Geoff Rottmayer with Athletic-Mission.com and I help players and coaches through their development process and in this video I am going to share with you the importance of the sweet spot on the baseball or softball bat and why we must teach kids where this is.

After many years of working with kids, I have learned that we cannot assume and that they must be taught everything to include something we take for granted such as where is the sweet spot of their baseball bat.

Let’s first understand how I define the sweet spot - this is the place along the barrel of the bat that is best to make contact in terms of what will make the ball come off the bat the fastest.

If you have played the game you understand that if you do not make contact on the sweet spot it stings your hands - the bat vibrates and it hurts.

So you have to explain this to kids - there is an ideal spot in the baseball bat to hit the ball. Most of them don’t know this - the older guys learn by experience and hurting their hands enough - so teaching kids is a must because less vibration allows for solid contact which then equates to more power.

So here what I do when I explain to kids where this sweet spot is:

We will make a paper cone and place it on the knob of the bat:

We will then grab the baseball and start tapping on the bat and you will eventually reach the sweet spot.

the sweet spot typically appears about 5-6 inches from the end of the bat and it’s pretty similar from bat to bat. The width of it is probably going to be about 2 inches.

Once a player understands this and is able to consistently square up ball on the sweet bat, it feels good in our hands, and the ball wont lose any energy making the vibration so it won’t slow down as much when it is hit.

So more energy mean the ball travels further - and we know that hitting the ball one mph hour hard is a different if a few feet so could be a difference in how the ball travels after it’s been hit.

So I hope this makes sense, teach your kids this. Trust me when I say, they need to be taught what to do. It drives me crazy when a coach says that a player should know what to do and it happens, I hear it with my own ears.

No, they have to be taught. And you have to be willing to repeat yourself over and over. Kids don’t learn at the rate of adults. So being a coach requires being patient and being willing to repeat yourself over and over.
