In my opinion, Sound Blaster SBX surround presented the most obvious surround effect near to my head, while DTS Headphone:X (Spacious) and Sound Blaster 7.1 VSS w/ SXFI created a very convincing surround sound room effect. SXFI itself is designed to emulate speakers and room acoustics, and I believe it works well. SXFI is not directly a surround sound technology, it recreates the virtual speakers with whatever channels you give it.

I apologize for the poor SXFi recording quality. The hiss was caused by Realtek line-in, not the SXFi device, the Sound Blaster X3.
