Rose Island

Rose Island is an abandoned resort near Charlestown, Indiana. It is situated on a peninsula called the Devil’s Backbone. It was known as Fern Grove in the 1880s. It originally had 100 picnic tables, a dance hall, a dining hall, and a hotel. It was used to help the ferry and steamboat industry by giving people a resort destination. In 1923 David Rose bought the property and put in 22 cottages, a couple rides; merry go round, and wooden roller coaster, a small zoo, and an Olympic size swimming pool. It was the only outdoor filtered swimming pool in the Midwest at the time. He renamed the park, Rose Island. He was able to keep the park going during the depression, but the 1937 flood wiped out the park and he was never able to recover financially. Charlestown State Park acquired the property and set up a two hour walking tour to see the remaining artifacts and tell the history of the resort. Join us as we take a walk back in time.
