The Basic Math Refresher Quiz (with Answers):

Question 1 - Fire Hose Calculation:
You're tasked with connecting a fire hose to a hydrant. The hose has a diameter of 2 inches. What is the cross-sectional area of the hose?

Answer: B) 4 square inches

To find the cross-sectional area of a circle, use the formula A = πr^2, where r is the radius. In this case, the radius is 1 inch, so A = π(1^2) = π square inches ≈ 3.14 square inches.

Question 2 - Water Flow Rate:
If a fire hydrant can discharge 1,000 gallons of water in 5 minutes, what is the flow rate in gallons per minute?

Answer: A) 100 GPM

Flow rate is calculated by dividing the total volume by the time. In this case, 1,000 gallons ÷ 5 minutes = 200 gallons per minute (GPM).

Question 3 - Ladder Length Calculation:
You need to reach a window on the third floor of a building. If each floor is 12 feet high, how long should the ladder be to reach the window?

Answer: C) 36 feet

To reach the third floor, you need a ladder that is 3 times the height of one floor, which is 3 x 12 feet = 36 feet.

Question 4 - Fire Truck Speed:
If a fire truck travels 120 miles in 2 hours, what is its average speed in miles per hour?

Answer: B) 60 mph

Average speed is calculated by dividing the total distance by the time. In this case, 120 miles ÷ 2 hours = 60 miles per hour (mph).

Question 5 - Water Tank Capacity:
A fire department's water tank can hold 1,500 gallons of water. If it's currently filled to 60% capacity, how many gallons of water are in the tank?

Answer: B) 900 gallons

To find the amount of water in the tank, multiply the capacity by the percentage filled: 1,500 gallons x 60% = 900 gallons.

Question 6 - Fire Suppression Time:
If it takes 3 firefighters 20 minutes to suppress a small fire, how long will it take 6 firefighters to do the same job?

Answer: B) 10 minutes

More firefighters can complete the job faster. In this case, it will take half the time with 6 firefighters, so 20 minutes ÷ 2 = 10 minutes.

Question 7 - Firefighting Budget:
A fire department has an annual budget of $500,000. If $250,000 is allocated for equipment and training, how much is left for other expenses?

Answer: C) $350,000

Subtract the allocated amount from the total budget: $500,000 - $250,000 = $350,000.

Question 8 - Fire Extinguisher Rating:
You're choosing a fire extinguisher for your kitchen. The fire extinguisher you're considering has a 3-A:40-B:C rating. What types of fires can it effectively combat?

Answer: D) Ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical fires

The rating indicates the types of fires the extinguisher can combat:

3-A: Ordinary combustibles (e.g., wood, paper)
40-B: Flammable liquids (e.g., gasoline, oil)
C: Electrical fires
Now, let's delve into the interview with Jobwise Jones, a seasoned firefighter, to gain insights into the importance of math skills in the firefighting profession and how these skills are applied in real-life situations.
