Dedicated to the memory of my great-grandmother, Janie Thomasson Davis--or as she was known to her grandchildren, "Ma-ma." She was born in 1892, and she left teaching when she married. When her son, my grandfather, fought as a Marine in World War II, she prayed on her knees every afternoon near the spring in the woods where my father kept minnows for fishing. Despite arthritis and the frailties of age, she prayed on her knees every night until her death in 1974.
