The "russkaya psovaya borzaya" : the borzoi

Borzoi is the translation of "borzaya" wich means "Fast" in Russian

The Russian wolfhound is the idea of a Tsar

Back in 1650 when a Russian aristocrat wanted a fast hunting dog : he imported an Arabian greyhound in Russia

but the dog wasn't made for the cold Russian weather and died.

So He bought another and crossed it with a Russian sheepdog : a thick coated dog made for the unforgiving Russian winters.

The new dog was both fast and equipped to deal with the snow : the Russian wolfhound was born

The original name "russkaya psovaya borzaya" was changed to an international simpler standard name : The Borzoi

Theses dogs are bred to hunt : to find wolves and wait for the hunter to catch up.

Back in the Tsars Era, it was usual to hunt with packs of 30 borzois and more

As a “sighthound,” these dogs have an incredible wide field vision of 270-degrees

With a special hunting ability : a high acuity allover the retina, spoting it's prey from far away !

If the dog is out off leash : it will instinctively chase everything ! A fully fenced yard is a necessity in your garden !

The dog is huge : one of the tallest sighthound breeds.

It's also very elegant : they make great decorative couch potatoes

A weekly hairbrush will keep your borzoi gracious

Borzois are slight dogs : don't feed them too much at once in order to avoid gastric torsion

Borzoi can be very stubborn when they are not properly motivated,

learning tricks may be very challenging.

They get bored with repetitive, apparently pointless activity


So if you don't have small animals at home yet, if you love gracious couch potatoes with gracious manners and walks in the cold winter this breed may suits you !
