Kostik Voloshin dreams of leaving the USSR for abroad. One day, escaping from the revenge of card player Goga, Kostia boards the train heading from Moscow to Odessa and sets off for the city of his childhood. The Gem by the Sea (another name of Odessa) meets Kostia as her dear child. There he finds his old friends and gets involved in new swindles. As time passes, his main goal – to “earn” money enough to leave the USSR – gives place for another one – to get even with a local underworld leader Balaban, with whom Kostia is tied not only by blood, but by love to the same women, and an old fateful family story…
