This video helps you see and understand 251 (ii-V-I) chord progressions. Chords are presented visually, by stacking the 3rd and 7th as NUMBERS in the right hand, and playing the ii V and I, written as ROMAN NUMERALS in the left hand.

Visual patterns start to form with the numbers, as the right hand gently glides between either a 3rd & 7th or a 7th & 3rd throughout the video.

The ii V I left hand notes correspond to the second degree (supertonic), fifth degree (dominant) and first degree (tonic) of each key signature you move through.

ii V I chord progressions are colour-coded. Each of the 12 key signatures is given a unique colour. Chords move through all major key signatures to provide you with an easy daily practice routine. A click track is added to the audio so you can play along at a steady and comfortable pace for learning.

ii V I chord progressions are incredibly common in both jazz and classical music, although they use very different systems for explaining these common sounds! (Roman Numerals and Functional Harmony are found in modern theory and jazz theory, while Figured Bass, Partimento, The Rule of the Octave, Cadences, Schemata etc. have only recently been re-discovered to form the basic understanding of most classical music.)

If you’re wanting to learn modern/jazz improvisation, these ii V I basic chord progressions will be your first goal to master! Learn your ii V I progressions inside out, back to front and upside down before you learn anything else.

In the book Effortless Mastery, the Jazz Pianist Kenny Werner confirms this when he writes

“80% of all jazz standards are comprised of the II-V-I progression, a succession of chords. If you really master that progression in all keys, you’ll find that you can fly through most tunes instantly. But before mastering this fundamental progression, your restless mind may have already driven you to study more exotic ones. By not having learned the II-V-I, you are probably doomed to fail in the playing of more modern progressions as well as the basic ones….

… Why do most of us move on when we haven’t yet mastered anything? We are afraid that we won’t become great players, and that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy…

… Spending enough time learning something would feel interminably slow, but that that is the way of true growth. IT TAKES WHAT IT TAKES. The fact is that if you don’t stay with the material long enough for it to become comfortable, you’ll find that it doesn’t stay with you. Then you will truly be wasting your time! It really doesn’t pay to move on until something is mastered.”
