2022 Volkswagen Arteon R (overview)
With a hatchback body disguised by avant-garde styling, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon sedan is as pretty as it is practical. Unfortunately, the four-door's fascinating appearance gets lost in translation when it comes to how it drives. Sure, it has a peppy, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and stimulating steering feedback, but those qualities still don't make it particularly engaging. Although the VW's cabin has limo-like passenger space and can hold a lot of cargo under its rear hatch, the interior isn't nearly as luxurious as the top-of-the-line model is expensive. Still, the 2022 Arteon is easily the most elegant-looking model to bear the brand's iconic logo, and it shows that passenger cars remain relevant at VW.
What's New for 2022?
Volkswagen gives the 2021 Arteon fresh exterior details and various interior updates. The former includes new front bumpers, new wheel designs, the adoption of the company's new logo, and more differentiation for the sporty R-Line. All models are now offered in Kings Red metallic paint; the R-Line adds Oryx White and Lapiz Blue. Inside, the Arteon has better materials and redesigned elements, which look to address some of our complaints. The highlights include a thicker and more distinctive steering wheel, more intricate air vents, touch-sensitive climate controls, and adjustable ambient interior lighting. Newly standard is a digital gauge cluster. The latest version of VW's infotainment software also arrives with a new touchscreen and the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
SE, $38,190.
SEL R-Line, $42,790.
SEL Premium R-Line, $48,190.
The Arteon is motivated by a 268-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Most versions offer standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, except the SEL Premium, which is all-wheel-drive only. Depending on the trim level, the Arteon comes standard with 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels. Our all-wheel-drive test vehicle managed a 6.1-second sprint to 60 mph, which is slower than V-6-powered rivals, such as the Toyota Avalon and the Nissan Maxima. The VW's powertrain is tuned for efficiency, so acceleration is a bit soft off the line. Adaptive suspension dampers are standard and can adjust automatically to your driving style or be manually set to Comfort, Normal, or Sport. Regardless of the setting, the ride is smooth and controlled. Precise steering is reminiscent of the 10Best-winning Golf GTI, and handling is competent, but you won't confuse this big VW for a sports sedan.
The EPA estimates the front-wheel-drive 2021 Arteon will earn 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. All-wheel-drive versions see those figures drop to 20 mpg city and 31 highway.

Inside, the VW Arteon is furnished with high-quality materials, but there's a distinct lack of design flair. Nevertheless, VW carved out plenty of interior room from the big five-door's rakish profile. Two large-framed six-footers can ride upfront without ever rubbing elbows. Rear seating is similarly accommodating, and there's a noticeable increase in legroom compared with the VW Passat. The Arteon's hatchback opens to reveal a generous 27 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard on every Arteon. It's primarily controlled through touch inputs, and there's no longer a volume knob, but there are also touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel. Along with two USB ports, the VW has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Stepping up to the SEL provides navigation and wireless charging; the Premium R-Line features a powerful Harman/Kardon audio system. Additional connected features, such as remote vehicle unlocking and emergency assistance, are available with a Volkswagen Car-Net subscription.
The Arteon hasn't been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) but Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named it a Top Safety Pick. It does come standard with some driver-assistance technology, such as forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist are standard on SEL models, while only the SEL Premium has automatic high-beam control, a surround-view camera system, and a parking-assistance feature with front and rear parking sensors.
Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.
Available adaptive cruise control.
