How to Get a PhD in Computer Science, and My Dissertation

Here I go over some of the basic aspects and procedures when getting a Ph.D. (doctoral degree) and going through my dissertation at a high level. The purpose of a Ph.D. is to get an academic job of some kind, and a dissertation is a culminating work in a particular subject, usually through some set of research and/or articles that are published in a peer-reviewed journal or conference.

Getting a Ph.D. usually involves (1) a comprehensive examination, (2) prospectus, and (3) a dissertation (sometimes there is coursework and/or teaching assistant work too). The comprehensive exam is about understanding a graduate student's knowledge of the particular subject you're in, usually through a written and an oral component in front of a committee. The prospectus is an outline of the research topic, what things have been done for the research, and what the timeline for completing them is. A dissertation is a long document (usually over 100 pages) that contains an introduction to the subject, and all of the research done during the Ph.D.
