This traditional African American spiritual reflects how many of us feel at times, helpless and in need of God's love. The songs of slavery often show us how music translate our history, as it does in this song, as African Americans, sold into slavery, often were motherless, as they were sold at auctions where families were separated. It is among the most poignant spirituals for that reason.
