A bit of background to shanties and the South Australia shanty: Sea shanties were sung on merchant sailing ships to help the crew with the rhythmic tasks of heaving (pushing) and hauling (pulling).

This version of the South Australia sea shanty has both - heaving on the pump handles while other crewmen were hauling on ropes attached to the pump wheel.

The Rolling Kings in the chorus is most likely a reference to one of the common cargoes of a merchant vessel heading to South Australia - timber.

As in a lot of sea songs, there is a lament for leaving a woman behind, in this case Miss Nancy Blair (no relation).
