Save before you attempt Mason mission. Position you main horse near Mason, command him to stay, use Mason horse to chase the wild horses, approach Mason while the horses are still running towards him, when he takes the picture skip the cutscene, jump on your horse and follow the wild horses. You should catch the MFT before he cross the train tracks. If you don't see the horse reload and try again.
