06 - Bloodhound SSC - Preparing Strain Gauges

In this video I'm demonstrating the preparation of strain gauges for positioning on a Bloodhound SSC load cell.

These are 350ohm shear strain gauges, and have been manufactured by our sister company Micro Flexi-tronics Ltd, or often abbreviated as MFL. MFL produces many different types of strain gauges at their factory in Northern Ireland and are also sponsoring the Bloodhound project, by supplying the strain gauges.

Before the strain gauges can be positioned on the load cell they need to be laid under special heat proof tape, this will protect the strain gauge elements whilst they are being handled and then oven cured later, I'm also trimming the tape ready for positioning on the load cell.

When each strain gauge is manufactured by MFL they usually provide small positioning arrows next to the strain gauge grid indicating the central position, this helps me line up the gauges to the center lines I scribed on the load cells earlier.

Once all 8 strain gauges are positioned they are ready for applying the strain gauge cement.
