Biological fractals, including cells and cellular ensembles of complex spatial organization, can be quantitatively characterized by the fractal dimension as a measure of filling the space with the structure under study. As you know, traditional geometric objects have an integer dimension: a line is one-dimensional, a flat surface is two-dimensional, and a sphere's surface is three-dimensional. The fractal line goes beyond the one-dimensional space, intruding into the two-dimensional one; the fractal plane partially extends into three-dimensional space. Fractal structures provide an additional fourth dimension to life: although living things occupy three-dimensional space, their physiology and anatomy function as if they were four-dimensional.
