Hey everybody, this is jackie Bolen from eslspeaking.org. So today I'm going to talk about my top five ESL sentence structure activities. In my opinion, time spent building better sentences in your TEFL classes is never wasted time. Sentences are the foundation of any language so yeah, it's a worthwhile use of class time certainly to focus on building sentences and sentence structure with your students.

My first activity is, Is that sentence correct? This is super simple. I just write up a few sentences on the board and then I put students into pairs and they have to decide with their partner if the sentence is correct, or not. And then if incorrect, they have to make the required changes.

The next one is flash cards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFIbOJklCO8). So when I teach kids, I'm all about flashcards and I will almost never go to class without a set of them. There are so many different games and activities you could do using flashcards in order to get students to make sentences.

The next one is dictogloss (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F-IkZZqvFM). This is kind of a classic listening activity for intermediate and higher advanced level students. I write a passage related to whatever I'm teaching that day, the grammar point or vocabulary set or whatever. Then I put students into pairs and I read it out at a faster than normal pace for the level of the students. It's hard to give you an exact thing but you have to use your best judgment. Read it out quite quickly. Students might be a little bit stressed out that they don't understand but that's okay. I tell them to take notes and then with their partners, they attempt to recreate what they heard. I read it out again and students repeat the process and then finally in the end, they can compare what they have with the original version.

Alright, the next one is mixed-up sentences. This is just a simple activity for beginners. I write down some sentences on the board or in a PowerPoint or worksheet that are mixed up in terms of word order and students have to put them in the correct order. If you want to make it even easier for absolute beginners you can do the capital letter and then attach the last word in the sentence to the period or question mark or whatever it is just to give even some more hints for that.

The next one is dictation practice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxnsWh77tMM). I know dictation is kind of old school but I still think it has some value in the English language classroom or the language learning classroom. The way it works is I just read out some sentences and students have to dictate them. It can be a really nice way to focus on things like spelling, punctuation, and then also sentence structure.

If you want to like level up a little bit, you could read out some questions and then students have to dictate the question and then they have to write their own answer to it or do the opposite, dictate a statement and then students have to come up with a question. So that's a little bit of a nice way just to make it a little bit more difficult and to focus on sentence structure, of course.
