Meet Phil | Maya 3D modeling and animation - Pixar "Luxo Jr" style

Hi everyone, I'm glad to present you my new friend and mascot of my future animations... "Phil" is a Philco 90 cathedral style radio from 1931. I'm sure you have all seen at least one in your life, in old movies or maybe in reality! At this time, technology was expensive and therefore built to resist through time. Some of them are still alive today and rocking the world with their trembling melodies.

Phil is one of these survivors of time. Trapped in an old and dusty museum that nobody ever visited anymore, he decided to escape and discover the infinite world. As you may imagine, a lot of things have changed since 1931, that's why Phil is so curious and has to feel/touch/open/jump on and alas break everything! But he as a pure and kind heart so everybody likes him. Will you too? Just give him a chance, I'm sure his malicious behaviour will charm you as well as it did for me while I was animating him :)

Technically speaking now (some of you might be interested!), Phil is a high-poly Mesh composed of about 35 000 polygons. I created for now 11 Blend Shapes to make him deforms realistically and look funny. The cable is a simple NURBS cylinder that I animated with clusters and a wire deformer. The textures are relatively simple, the front is from a real high-rez picture of the radio, the others are tileable wood and rubber textures. I did the entire modelling and animation in Maya, texturing with Photoshop and the video with After Effects/Premiere. More infos at the end.

I have big hopes for Phil, I'd like to create little animation with him later, to introduce my new characters, like short and funny presentations. We'll see if Phil is ok with this, for now he's more or less playing with (and destroying) everything that crosses his path!
