Notes by Kathleen McDonald: "Thompson (1899-1984, Harvard ’20) composed the piece on commission from Serge Kossevitsky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the 1940 opening of the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. G. Wallace Woodworth (H’24) was to conduct the entire Harvard student body, and the new anthem was to symbolize the center’s mission: the performance of music. As an undergraduate, Thompson had auditioned for the Glee Club. He was rejected, and it seems his life’s work was an attempt to strike back. Accordingly, his compositional focus was predominantly choral, accessible to amateur choruses, and almost all written on commission. The tempo marking, “lento,” was very important. Thompson was deeply affected by France’s recent fall to the Nazis, so the “Alleluia” was not to sound joyous, but rather reflective of the Book of Job: “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.” "
