"The Ransom of Red Chief" by O. Henry is a humorous short story about two small-time criminals who kidnap a boy named Johnny Dorset, hoping to extort a hefty ransom from his wealthy father. However, the plan quickly backfires as the boy, who calls himself Red Chief, proves to be more than a handful, turning the kidnappers' lives into a living nightmare with his wild antics and aggressive play. Instead of being scared, Red Chief is thrilled by the adventure, terrorizing the kidnappers with his idea of fun. As their situation becomes increasingly unbearable, the kidnappers decide to return the boy to his father, only to find that Mr. Dorset is well aware of his son's troublesome nature. There is a nice happy twist of irony that I won't reveal here.
