Welcome to my Tears In Heaven easy strumming lesson!

I'm gonna show you how to play "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton in the easiest way possible. Now, just because it's simplified doesn't make it easy. There's still a lot going on here, but the rhythm is pretty straight forward, since we're not doing any of that fancy fingerpicking stuff. It's some chord shapes - quite a few chord shapes - and a simple strumming pattern.

We start off with the chords needed for the interlude and verse. They're basically the same part with just a couple little changes. The chords are: G, C, D, D/F#, Em, Em7.

It's already quite a few chords to start out with, so we take our time working through some of the switches and focusing in the areas where we'll need to put the most effort. We practice playing them using downstrokes, for both the interlude and verse, to make sure we can switch with the timing, and then we learned the strumming pattern. This one has a pretty basic pattern.

There's no syncopation involved, so remember to strum with broad down and upstrokes and count out loud! Tap your foot if you can, work on the pattern over a few chord shapes, and then we can put it together with the chord progression that we use in our interlude, and our verse. We play each a couple times and then move on to the chorus.

The chorus has a couple more chord shapes. Em, B7, G7. We go over the shapes talk a little bit about switching and then we practice the chorus using downstrokes only. You'll notice the bar at the top has twice as many rhythms slashes per chord. That's because we actually play the strumming pattern two times for each shape, but for now, just focus on counting "1234" for each shape and make sure you can make all the switches.

The bridge is a totally different part than the rest of the song. When I was trying to make this easy version of "Tears in Heaven" it all was falling into place but then I came across the bridge... And no matter what key you put it in, where you put the capo, there's no way to avoid barre chords in this song! I chose the absolute easiest way to pull it off... the bridge starts off with a Bb. And normally that's a full bar chord, but I show you a simpler way to do it that'll get you ready for barre chords. And then the F chord is the same thing so you're getting two chords for the price of one. The rest of the shapes are open shapes, there's a D minor in there. We practice it downstroke only just like we did for every other section that we do the strumming pattern with it.

Finally, we practice a shorter version of the tune, transitioning between each part, so if you can play along with this you'll be totally fine playing along to the original recording (you just have to repeat some of the sections a few more times).
