Porto Flavia Sardinia Italy | Man made wonder Porto Flavia
Porto Flavia a commercial port and a futuristic architectural work that revolutionized engineering in the early twentieth century. Porto Flavia is a man-made wonder located in the district of Masua, in the territory of Iglesias comune of South Sardinia in Italy and it is the most visible extremity of a complex of underground tunnels that end in a construction carved out of the rock face. It got its name from Cesare Vecelli, 'father' of the mine, who named it after his daughter (Flavia). The structure was used as a boarding system for directly transporting the extremely heavy minerals that were lowered onto the anchored vessels on the turquoise sea.
Porto Flavia was extraordinary monument of industrial archaeology looms over an enchanting coastline, gifting visitors with a breathtaking vista of the thousand-shaded blue Masua sea, and on the evocative Pan di Zucchero sea stacks, a natural monument 133 metres (440 ft) tall. A genuine engineering masterpiece which improved miners’ life condition and reduced mineral transportation times and costs. The port was operational until the 1960s.
This impressive sea harbor is undoubtedly one of the most important industrial archaeological sites in the world. The area is a center for mining, excavated by hand about 600 meters from the mountains. The mountain is rich in mineral deposits that are loaded directly into the hold of merchant ships at sea.
Porto Flavia was built right on a cliff directly facing the sea in 1924, in order to allow miners to load ore directly on cargo ships, cutting the times spent transporting and loading the material by a significant amount.
Visiting Porto Flavia and the area of the wonderful Masua beach with an exclusive tour guide allows you to enjoy the beauty of the place and get to know the mining history in depth. This masterpiece of engineering is 1.5 hours drive from Cagliari and it can be accessed by road from Masua
Two tunnels about six hundred meters long, those that were used for the transport of minerals, emerge on an overhanging sea: the structure of the port, which, was built in the rock wall in front of the suggestive stack Pan di Zucchero.
