Need of Image Intensifier

Image intensification is the basis of night vision. As the name suggest this device is used for increasing the intensity of existing light in the environment for an optical system to enable operation in low-light conditions. Considering the Indian Army’s operational requirement where they have to be vigilant in day and night, the Image Intensifier plays a crucial role. As we all know that Indian Army had procured 72,400 Sig Sauer rifles under the fast-track procurement deal to meet the shortage of assault rifles that are already being used by frontline troops. Army is also looking to ink order for the batch of 72,000 Sig Sauer which was cleared by Defense Acquisition Council back in September last year. However, the optical device meant for the SiG rifles was not procured to reduce the cost.

Image Intensifier for Sig 716

Indian Army is looking for indigenous options to procure Image Intensifiers and other optical accessories for the Sig 716 rifles. Back in December last year, the Defence procurement board has cleared the procurement of additional 29,760 image intensifiers for the Sig 716 rifles. The image intensifier deal will be worth Rs 1410 crore.

On 5th July Indian Army has issued an AoN for 29,762 Night Sight (II) for 7.62 x 51 mm Assault Rifles which is non other than Sig Sauer 716 riles in operation with Army, along with accessories for each Assault Rifles like Lens Cover, Eye Guard, Cleaning Kit, Battery Pack Charger and 03 Sets of Batteries. Each set of batteries corresponds to No of batteries required to operate the Sight.

Technical capability

The Sight should have an adjustable illuminated Bullet Drop Compensator (BDC) reticle pattern that enables engagement of human target upto 500m with the 7.62x51mm Aslt Rif. Bullet drop compensation scopes use a specific reticle pattern to indicate how far bullets drop over a given distance. When we look through a scope, the reticle has multiple aiming points that are stacked under the main crosshair. We can even say that a BDC reticle is like multiple reticles inside the main reticle. Range markers 100m onwards with an interval of 100m till 800m to be provided to facilitate engagement. Facility of range estimation upto 800m also to be provided within the sight. It will have minimum magnification of 4X.
