Chop Suey appeared on American broadcast radio just before September 11th, 2001. It became a worldwide hit and even survived it's inclusion on Clear Channels list of inappropriate songs to air after 9/11. Chop Suey is one of System's most recognizable and notable songs, having been professionally parodied more than a few times and receiving chart placement around the world.

Lyrically, the songs deals with seemingly inane issues as well as intense concepts of death and religion. Writer and band member Daron Malakian mentions, "the song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die'. The lyric, 'Father, into your hand I commit my spirit,' is a reference to Jesus' death on the cross, as, according to the gospels, it was one of the seven things Jesus said while dying."

This tutorial covers the four guitar parts that make up the introduction to Chop Suey. In the original song, System of a Down uses CGCFAD tuning, which is all of the strings dropped down a whole step except the low E string, which is dropped down 2 whole steps. In this tutorial, we use a tuning that sounds like the original, but is a whole step up: DADGBE. You might recognize this as a simple drop-D tuning. It's standard tuning with the low E string dropped down to a D note.
