Google Home Hub Vs Lenovo Smart Display

The ultimate smart home battle between the Lenovo Smart Display and the Google Home Hub is on. This home automation showdown is really between what I consider to be the top two smart home products on the market today.

With the Google Assistant on board both of these devices, both devices already have a leg up on most of the competition. They both have great software, and what's crazy to me is the fact that both of them have the exact same software now. Google has updated the Google Assistant Smart Display application version and the Cast Firmware Version in both products to the same version. This means that both the Lenovo Smart Display and the Google Home Hub can use the new home control menu. It also means that both are capable of casting to other Google Assistant-enabled products, as well as being casted to with both music and video.

There are some obvious design choices that are different between the two, and this is where things start to diverge. The Google Home Hub doesn't have a camera, we know that from the initial reports. It's also a relatively small device and it's intended to be that way. Google doesn't want their device to be front and center, just there when you need it and capable of anything you want.

On the other hand, Lenovo has added a camera, made their device much larger (8" or 10"), made their speaker(s) louder, and have made their device stand out in many ways. At first look, you'll probably think the Lenovo Smart Display is the much better device, and for the $50 differential, it will make financial sense to most people.

The thing is, both of these devices have a different place in your smart home. They've been designed for a different spot, and I think they can both live in the same home. See, the Lenovo Smart Display has the camera, and really fills a bigger room up nicely. It can sit in the kitchen or a large public space, while the Google Home Hub with its smaller stature, is more likely to make sense as a bedroom Assistant. It doesn't have the camera, so it's better from a privacy standpoint (although Lenovo's device has a physical cover that you place over the camera). It's also a much smaller device and adjusts to the lighting level in your room really well.

All in all, both of these devices are amazing. They can control your home, answer any question you might have, and really, just are fun to have around. Go ahead and pick up the Lenovo Smart Display from Lenovo.com (it'll redirect to your country and you can see if they sell it there) or the Google Home Hub from store.google.com (again, it'll redirect).
