Have you ever found yourself in an ASL class or at a local ASL gathering, and noticed that some people sign certain signs in a slightly different way? Ever noticed subtle differences in word choices between your friends and colleagues who speak ASL? Or, are you just curious whether there are accents and styles in ASL - similar to the different accents and styles you might find in any spoken language?
Just like English - or any other spoken language - ASL has subtle differences that are influenced by region, personal preference, and other factors. Certain words may differ between different ASL speakers.
For example, style may differ between the East and West coasts of the United States, and specific phrases may be common or in use in one region, but used much less frequently somewhere else. Speed may differ by region or personal style, with some ASL speakers signing slow and others signing more quickly. And movement limitation may influence the way someone signs as well.
In this educational video, you’ll get a sneak peek into some of those different accents and styles in ASL, so you can communicate with signers all over the US, and adapt to different American Sign Language styles with ease.
