Difference between Present Perfect Continuous and Present Perfect
Have a look at this example.
His hands are very dirty. He has been repairing his car.
As you can understand, "He has been repairing his car." is in Present Perfect Continuous.
Here, if you look closely, you'll see that HE HAS BEEN REPAIRING HIS CAR is basically an explanation of why his hands are very dirty.
So why are his hands dirty? It's because HE HAS BEEN REPAIRING HIS CAR.
That's the reason.
What is the reason? The reason is that he has been performing an activity.
That's what we have to remember. Here, the speaker intends to let others know that this person has been performing an activity.
When we are interested in the activity and not whether it has been finished or not, we use the Present Perfect Continuous. Remember in this case it doesn't matter if something has been finished or not.
In this example, the activity (repairing the car) has not been finished.
Now have a look at this example.
There was something wrong with the car.
But he has repaired it.
Here, "He has repaired it" means the car is working perfectly fine now… here, the important thing is something has been finished. "Has repaired" is a completed action. We are interested in the result of the activity (the repaired car), and not in the activity itself.
We also use the present perfect continuous to ask or say how long someone has been performing an activity that is still happening.
How long have you been watching TV?
How long have you been doing it?
He has been painting the ceiling all day.
They have been playing video games since the afternoon.
On the other hand, we use the Present Perfect to ask or say how many activities have been finished or how many times an activity has been done.
How many films have you watched so far?
How many times have you watched The Batman?
We have played cricket twice this month.
As you can see, these sentences refer to completed actions.
So there you go.
