The Fallout Mod Manager is one of the many programs that can be used to get the files out of Skyrim that we will need. Vanilla Skyrim stores all of the game meshes, scripts, sounds, and just about any other asset you can think of in an archive called with the extension BSA. BSA stands for Bethesda Softworks Archive. We can use the Fallout Mod Manager for extracting the game files in order to customize them. There are also other programs that can be used to extract the contents of a BSA file and you are welcome to explore other options. For this series we will not be covering other BSA extracting applications as we will be working solely with the Fallout Mod Manager.
In this video we will take a look at how we can trick the Fallout Mod Manager into thinking that we have Fallout installed. This is not really a necessary process as you can make use of the Fallout Mod Manager's BSA extracting tool without taking all of the steps in this video. The idea behind tricking the Fallout Mod Manager into thinking Fallout is installed is so we can have full access to all the functions within the program should we ever need to make use of them. Once we have the application installed we will go ahead and extract the meshes BSA file as we will need all the nif files within that BSA in order to begin learning how to develop our own custom game assets.
