The Valmet M78 is the RPK model in Valmet’s lineup. These were available in .223, 7.62x39, and 308

They feature milled and stamped receivers (.223&762x39 are stamped only, .308 can be found in either stamped or milled), the milled being very identical to that of a Galil, and both being similar to other Valmet models that are banned in Canada. Given this, they can be popular for making clones of M76’s (such as this one), M71’s, and others. In Canada Ak and all variants are banned with the exception of the Valmet M78 and M88 models

Altering the appearance of a firearm does not change its legal classification in Canada. While this rifle appears to be aesthetically similar to a Valmet M76, it is simply a Valmet m78 stamped receiver with some M76 furnishings to give it the cosmetic appearance of one.

These are tight firearms with exemptionally smooth actions (the milled are generally smoother than the stamped). While based on the AK47, Finland purpose built the Valmet for optimal accuracy, such that the platform can provide anyway, and enhanced reliability in arctic conditions.

*Valmet M78’s and M88’s are legal to possess in Canada with a PAL

Semi auto Valmet m78 & m88's are currently the only true “AK variants” that are legal in Canada. Some other similar appearing legal firearms are the vz58/cz858 series of rifles and the Chinese Type 81. Valmets are specifically listed as exempt in OIC #13, which is the legislation that created the 12.5 class of prohibited rifles, effectively banning all AK variants with this small exception.
