Mother’s Day:

Hello, today we are going to chat about Mother’s Day.

Many countries around the world have a day celebrating mums and motherhood .
But, did you know that Mother's Day in the UK actually started out as a church holiday. While it may now be commonly known as Mother's Day, Mothering Sunday has been celebrated for centuries . The holiday takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent each year. Mothering Sunday has been associated with mothers and with Mary from the beginning. However, it was originally about returning to your mother church. Someone’s mother church is the church they got baptised in. In the past, it was seen as very important to return to the mother church once a year.
Servants, often working far away from home, would get time off to return to their church and families. For some servants, this was one of only two days they got off work a year – the other being Boxing Day.

Over the last century, American influence means the holiday has become more about celebrating your mother. Like many holidays, people give cards and presents. Often flowers are given to mothers and other important women in your life. Giving daffodils is especially common, since these bright flowers are plentiful 6 in early spring. As a little girl, I was always so excited around Mother’s Day. I would run out of school every year, with a handmade card and a little bunch of daffodils. They were always badly hidden behind my back. I loved having something to give my mum that she hadn’t had to arrange for herself. The flowers seemed so beautiful at the time. Looking back, I think my mum definitely prefers the chocolate I tend to buy her now instead.

I don’t usually get to see my mum on Mother’s Day, so I send her a card in the post, and always make sure to give her a call. If I see her some time around then, I’ll give her chocolate and try to do something special with her. I really hope I’ll get the chance to take my mum out for the day sometime soon, perhaps to get an afternoon tea.
